Geographic Tongue - Clinical features, Histopathology and Treatment

Geographic tongue is an inflammatory but harmless condition affecting the surface of your tongue.

The tongue is normally covered with tiny, pinkish-white bumps (papillae), which are actually short, fine, hairlike projections.

With geographic tongue, patches on the surface of the tongue are missing papillae and appear as smooth, red "islands," often with slightly raised borders.

Geographic tongue also called erythema migrans and benign migratory glossitis, is a common benign condition.

Usually occurring on the dorsal and lateral surfaces of the tongue in approximately 1-2% of the population.

The cause is unknown, although there are reports of increased frequency of this condition in people with stress and psoriasis of skin.
